Shaanxi Normal University (Alliance Study Abroad Program)
陕西师范大学
Xi'an, China

In August 2011, I enrolled in the Alliance for Global Education Program in Xi'an, China to continue my studies of Chinese and learn about the Silk Road. For an entire semester I took daily intensive Chinese classes, lived with a Chinese roommate, and participated in a 9 day Silk Road trip which spanned western China from the Muslim markets in the northern town of Urumqi, cave paintings in the oasis town of Dunhuang, and a Buddhist monastery in Northeast Tibet. It was a fascinating cultural experience and the trip of a lifetime.

After studying Chinese at Shaanxi Normal University, I became an English teacher for graduate level engineering students at Northwestern Polytechnical University. The classes I taught were mostly conversational English based off a university English textbook and self-made powerpoint presentations to supplement the classes, but this was my first time as the sole teacher in the classroom. The students were engaged and receptive to my lessons and were a true pleasure to teach.
