Sample Japanese Class

I am entering my third semester teaching Japanese at Hunter College now. Teaching Japanese has been particularly challenging because it is not my native language, but having spent many years in the classroom as a student, finally being on the teaching side is highly rewarding.

Below is an sample lesson from Chapter 6 of the textbook Genki. This class was held on December 7, 2015. The goal of the class was to study two particular grammar forms: Vてはいけません, and ...から. I generally use powerpoint and upload the slides to the class website for review so students can focus more on in-class language practice rather than worrying about note taking. Despite the class being rather large (more than 25 students) I try to give students as much speaking time as possible and do a lot of pair-work.

I also use "exit tickets" at the end of class to collect feedback on what students got out of the class. There is space for them to reflect upon what they learned (reinforcing the information from recall) and also a chance to give me direct feedback on points they are still confused about. If there are several students with the same question, I include that in the powerpoint and open the floor for group discussion so they can (re-)teach themselves, but for more personal questions I sometimes respond directly and hand them back. Here are a few examples:
